Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) or Cold Laser Therapy is a non-invasive form of alternative medicine that applies low-power lasers or light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to the surface of the body. The treatment is drug-free, devoid of any risks or side effects, and is completely safe under the care of a qualified practitioner.

How it works

The philosophy behind LLLT is addressing the root cause of a symptom rather than masking it for temporary relief. Low-level light is applied directly to the problem area, which absorbs the laser light. This leads to the damaged cells having a chemical reaction, which helps stimulate their repair and regeneration.

What does it treat?

LLLT treats both chronic and acute injuries, like aches and pains, sprains, swelling, and torn tissues. The laser technique is effective in reducing inflammation, pain, and accelerating the healing process. It also helps rejuvenate your skin and heal serious skin conditions such as burns, edema, and dermatitis.

Does it hurt?

While the device does make contact with your skin, it does not radiate heat, sound, or vibrations. It is utterly non-invasive and painless, so most people don’t feel anything at all—at most, a slight tingling sensation as a result of the increased blood flow in the problem area.

Research

LLLT is increasingly becoming a widespread therapy alternative. It has proven over the years to effectively improve a variety of conditions, from wounds and back aches to arthritis and diabetes. In fact, The National Center for Biotechnology Information found through extensive research that LLLT successfully helps relieve various bodily pains. In one of their 2011 meta-analysis studies, they concluded that it is a highly effective therapy treatment for tissue repair and pain relief. A subsequent study revealed that specifically short-period application of LLLT is not only effective in pain relief, but also in the improvement of functional ability.

Fun Facts

  • The alternative name, “Cold Laser Therapy” is so named because it operates at a light wavelength that will not increase the thermal temperature of your body’s tissue (no heat!).
  • When compared to other forms of laser therapy, such as those used to cut tumours, the light intensity and risk is extremely low with LLLT.
  • Treatments only take between 5 and 20 minutes each!
