Immobility speaks to the lack of voluntary movement of the body or parts of the body. 1. Your arrival
On your first visit to an RMT, it is wise to arrive at least 10 to 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment. Massage therapy clinics require all new clients to complete a detailed medical history form. In some instances, you will receive this document electronically when you book an appointment. Even so, it would be best if you still arrived a bit early in case you need to provide additional information such as any insurance information.
2. Preparing for treatment
Once you’ve provided the details of your medical history, an RMT will then escort you to a treatment room to discuss the details and the issues you would like to address through massage therapy. After they are clear on what your needs are, the RMT will then leave the room so you can undress. It is recommended that you undress to your underwear. But if you are uncomfortable doing so, you can keep on some of your clothing, or you can remain fully dressed. If you wish to remain clothed, ensure you wear loose-fitting clothing that will not restrict your body during treatment. When you’ve undressed to your level of comfort, lie on the padded massage table and cover with the linens provided while you wait for the RMT to return.
3. The treatment
After your RMT returns, your treatment can begin. The massage table will be heated, and the settings can be adjusted to your liking so, if the table is too hot or not warm enough, let your massage therapist know. Based on the reason for your visit, the RMT will use massage therapy techniques tailored to your needs. It is very important to communicate if you feel that you want more or less pressure from your therapist, while some areas are more uncomfortable than others to be worked on, the session should always be to your comfort level.

Like a deep tissue massage, a trigger point massage goes deep into the muscles, but the aim of a trigger point massage is slightly different from that of a deep tissue massage. A trigger point massage aims to identify certain intensely tight spots and release them with gradual pressure held for a longer time. Trigger points are known to cause pain where they are located as well as pain that travels to other areas of the body (pain referral). A massage focusing on triggers points in the back, for example, may not only help with lower back pain but may also help to relieve conditions such as sciatica.
4. Sports massage
If your lower back pain is a result of sporting activities or other types of repetitive movement, you may benefit from sports massage therapy. A sports massage may use deep pressure alternated with soothing strokes and can focus only on the problem area or your entire body. Not only will a sports massage help relieve your lower back pain or other areas of pain, but it will also help to improve flexibility and performance.

1. Keep moving
In the past, the recommendation for upper back pain was bed rest. We now know that it will do more harm than good. When using an ice pack, you should use a towel over the surface of your skin to prevent nerve damage. If you do not have an ice pack available, you may use a frozen bag of peas. As a substitute for a heat pack, you can a hot water bottle or take a warm shower.
4. Try over-the-counter medication
Pain medication will not fix the problem, but it will help with the pain. This should be enough to help you resume activity. Simple over-the-counter medication, such as ibuprofen or naproxen, is often the most effective when dealing with acute upper back pain. Pain medication will also reduce inflammation.
5. See a chiropractor
If, after a few days, your pain is not lessening or it is getting worse, you should make an appointment to see a chiropractor. Chiropractic adjustments will address the cause of your back pain instead of the symptoms and prevent your condition from worsening.
